Vitamin D deficiency is associated with abnormal vascular endothelial function in non-dialysis CKD patients.
Researchers from the Cardiovascular Complications of Chronic Kidney Disease Group at the Cardiovascular Sciences Research Centre at SGUL, London, have demonstrated this association for the first time.
Although traditional risk factors for cardiovascular events were similar in all patient groups in this study, those with vitamin D levels lower than 37.5 nmol/L demonstrated lower endothelial function compared to patients with higher vitamin D levels.
Further studies are now required to establish the mechanism of action behind this relationship.
